The Border Security Force (BSF) pushed five people, including an Indian national, into Bangladesh through the Benipur border in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga on Wednesday morning.
They were pushed into Bangladesh through the Benipur border at around 6am. Later, locals detained them after they reached Jibannagar town and handed them over to police.
The five are Abdus Shukur Khan of Sharankhola in Bagerhat, Sharmin Akter Rumi and Hamida of Sylhet, Nayan of Chandpur, and Niyan, a resident of Kolkata, India.
Locals said the five entered Bangladesh through the Benipur border and were heading towards Jibannagar town when they came to their attention. On receiving the information, police from Jibannagar Police Station went to the spot, rescued the five and took them to the police station.
Jibannagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Solaiman Sheikh said the five had been taken to the police station. Their identities, citizenship and how they crossed the border were being verified. Necessary legal action would be taken after the verification.
Asked whether any of them was an Indian citizen, the OC said one of them spoke Hindi and claimed to be an Indian citizen. The matter was being verified, he added.

Police said the five would remain in custody until the verification process was completed. Authorities were also examining whether they had been pushed across the border by the BSF or crossed the border on their own.
