In a shocking act of alleged sabotage, fish worth over one and a half lakh taka were killed after poison was deliberately applied to a fish enclosure in South Amragachia village, under Amragachia Union of Mirzaganj upazila, Patuakhali. The incident occurred last Wednesday. Preparations are reportedly underway to file a case with the local police.
The owner of the fish enclosure, Md. Shuvo, is a local resident and an assistant teacher at NS Amragachia Government Primary School. As a hobby, he had been cultivating fish on 20 decimals of land beside his home. Despite his full-time job, he tended to the fish daily after returning from school.
Shuvo expressed his dismay, saying, “I wasn’t home when it happened. Upon returning in the morning, I found the fish floating dead. By noon, all were gone. The pond had various species, mainly tilapia. They were almost ready for sale.”
Locals reported seeing a pesticide bottle near the pond, suggesting deliberate poisoning under the cover of night. Shuvo's mother, Sathi Begum, said, “We had no known enemies. My son did this out of passion. Now everything is lost.”
Mirzaganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Nazrul Islam, said no written complaint had been received yet, but appropriate legal action will be taken upon submission.
