Prices of chicken and fish have increased again while that of vegetables remained stable in the kitchen market of the capital.
Broiler chicken prices jumped to Tk 180 per kg from Tk 170 and chicken known as Sonali soared to Tk 260 from Tk 230 per kg.
Traders said the recent flood in different parts of the country is the main reason for the price hike of chicken. Many poultry farms have been destroyed by the flood. Supply shortage have pushed up the chicken prices, they added.
Prices of all varieties of fish like pangas and tilapia have shot up in the city kitchen market. Fish has gone beyond the rich of the low income people.
Pangas was selling at Tk 200 per kg, tilapia at Tk 230-250 per kg, cultivated climbing fish at Tk 240-280 per kg, ruhi and catla at
Tk 250-300 per kg.
Small varieties of fish were also high in the market. Chapila was selling at Tk 400 per kg, sarputi at Tk 300 and pabda at Tk 400. One kg hilsa was selling at Tk 1,700.
Khorshed Alam, a private employee, who came to Hatirpool bazar on Thursday said, ‘It is difficult for the people like us to buy fish. Fish prices continue to rise. No one in the government is paying heed to the matter.’
“We cannot even buy pangas, tilapia and farmed fish which are called the fish of the poor, he added.
When asked about the reason for fish price hike, Sayem, a seller, said supply of fish in the market is very low. “I buy fish from Kawran bazar and sell in Hatirpool bazar.”
However, prices of eggs and most of the vegetables have remained stable in the kitchen market for around three weeks.
During a visit to some kitchen markets, this correspondent found that potato were selling at Tk 60 per kg, tomato at Tk 140, beans at Tk 240, papaya at Tk 30, ribbed gourd (Jhinga) at Tk 60, chichinga at Tk 60, yardlong bean (borboti) at Tk 70, sponge gourd (dhundal) at Tk 50, bitter gourd at Tk 60, ladies finger at Tk 50, pointed gourd (Potal) at Tk 60, spiny gourd at Tk 70, brinjal at Tk 60-80, sweet pumpkin at Tk 50, cucumber at Tk 40-50, taro root (kochur mukhi) at Tk 60 per kg.
Four pieces of lemon were sold at Tk 30. Green chilli was selling at Tk 180-200 per kg.
However, price of onion has decreased by Tk 5 per kg in the last one week but prices of ginger and garlic was stable with the last week’s rate.
Onion was selling at Tk 115 per kg, ginger at Tk 200 per kg and garlic at Tk 220 per kg.
