The first shipment of imported eggs from India has entered through Beanpole land port in the country on Monday. The price of an egg including duty has stood at Tk 7.23.
According to Benapole Land Port Authority and Clearing and Forwarding (C&F) agent sources, Dhaka’s BDS Corporation has imported 61,950 eggs in an Indian cargo truck as its first shipment after the Ministry of Commerce gave permission to import eggs.
The company that has got the approval to import 1 crore eggs, had imported 61950 eggs in their first consignment. After the land port process, the egg truck left the port around 10 pm on Sunday.
The import price was Tk 5.43 and duty was Tk 1.80. Altogether, total cost is Tk 7.23. However, this is not the final price, the transportation cost inside the country and others will be added too.
Director (Traffic) of Benapole land port of Jashore Md. Rezaul Karim said that the first consignment of eggs arrived from India in a truck.
Egg import is prohibited in Bangladesh. However, in the situation, the Commerce Ministry has allowed import with the consent of the Ministry of Livestock. On September 18, in the first phase four companies were allowed to import eggs from India.
Later, in two more phases, the government allowed a total of 15 companies to import 15 crore eggs. Government decided to import to control the price of eggs in the market.
A dozen eggs are currently being sold at Tk 150 to Tk 160 in the retail market in Dhaka. Eggs are being sold at a slightly higher price in the big market depending on the quality and rank. The concerned people think that the price may come down a little more due to the importation.
