Firewood use in Fulbari brickfield affects cropland

The owner of a brickfield at Fulbari upazila in Dinajpur has allegedly deposited a huge quantity of firewood to burn those as fuel. He was also allegedly using an illegal electric connection for the brick kiln.

According to sources, the owner of SWB brick field has built a brick kiln on cropland of village Nathan Jamadani under Betdighi union of Fulbari upazila for the last two-year and in violation of the environmental law was using firewood as fuel to burn bricks.

It is further alleged, the owner of the brick field has also made an illegal electric connection at the site where Kasim Uddin, brick-kiln labourer, was killed by electrocution.

Local residents, however, expressed concern at the construction of the brickfield in the cropland. Jiban Baskey and Parimal Baskey of Nathan village informed, from the very installation of the brickfield, firewood is being used as fuel there. Robinath Maddi of the same village informed, every year the smoke from the brick field damaged their crops. They said, they  can not lodge a protest anywhere against the influential owner of the brickfield.

Owner of the brick field Shahidul Islam and his partner informed, none of the brick field could run by following the environment rule. They claimed, every brick-field requires fire-wood as the primary fuel to burn the furnace of brick kiln.

Abdus Salam,Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Fulbari in this connection informed, he would take necessary action against the owner of the brick field after investigation.
