Several fire incidents occurred due to flying lanterns (Fanus) in different parts of the capital during New Year's celebrations in the wee hours of Saturday.

According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence officials, fire incidents occurred at least seven places just after the celebrations began at 12 midnight on Friday.

The firefighters brought the flames under control in city’s Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Khilgaon, Demra, Sutrapur, Lalbagh and Keraniganj areas.  Most of the fire incidents occurred on the rooftops.

However, there have been no reports of injuries. Fire Service and Civil Defence's media wing official Shahjahan Miah said that a building in Dhaka caught fire caused by flying lanterns during the New Year celebrations on early Saturday.

Another case of firework explosion occurred on the rooftop of a three-storied building in city’s Matuail area when the New Year revelers ignited lanterns around 12:15am, he added.

Two units of firefighters rushed to spot and doused the fire at around 1:38am.

Fire service sources said another fire incident happened when a firework exploded on the rooftop of a five-storied building at Dholaikhal in Dhaka around 12:40am and firefighters put out the fire at about 1:29am on Saturday.
