Find way to recognise freelancers: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed the authorities concerned to find out a way to recognise the freelances who bring foreign currencies to the country defying social barriers.

The freelancers earning a very good amount of money but face problems while getting married since they hold no social and institutional recognition. Find out a way how to recognize the freelancers, she said on Tuesday.

The PM made the remarks while discussing a project titled “Establishment of Sheikh Kamal IT Training and Incubation Center” during the weekly meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). 

Sheikh Hasina, who is the chairperson of ECNEC, joined the meeting from Ganobhaban through video conferencing while ministers, state ministers and secretaries concerned took part in it at the NEC Conference Room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

Planning Minister MA Mannan briefed the media after the meeting.

He said, “Government has taken many good initiatives for the ICT sector, generating huge amount of money. 

“Many people even earn a lot of money from home. A minister informed the meeting that a youth from a northern district earns around 1 crore,” he added.

The minister went on saying that the PM described an interesting story at today’s meeting.  “She (PM) told that freelancers work very well. They are very smarts and wear fine dresses but face problem during marriage. Bride’s families often inquire about their profession. When they say they do freelancing. Bride’s families then back off despite the freelancers earn more than any clerical or official job holders,” he added.

The PM then asked the people concerned to come up with solution to recognise freelancers socially and institutionally and whether the freelancers can get registrations, or memberships or certificate for their skills, Mannan said.

While approving the project the Establishment of Sheikh Kamal IT Training and Incubation Center, the PM also instructed the ICT Division to make arrangements for languages trainings on Chinese, Japanese, French and Spanish for youths.

The Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority will implement the project at an estimated cost of Tk 799 crore under the supervision of the ICT Division.

PM unveils two reports 

Sheikh Hasina also unwrapped the cover of the two reports on country’s economic and development issues during the ECNEC meeting.

The two reports were ‘Bangladesh Perspective Plan 2021-2041’ and ‘Sustainable Development Goals: Bangladesh Progress Report 2020’.
