In a strong call for change, Bangladeshi filmmakers are pushing for industry-wide reforms. Nearly 100 filmmakers and representatives of film organizations gathered at Dhaka's Ground Zero on Friday to discuss their "Cholochitro Shongskar Roadmap 2024" (Film Reform Roadmap 2024). The event also had participants joining virtually from outside Dhaka.
The filmmakers presented a 24-point agenda aimed at removing restrictive laws, setting up a film commission, and modernizing the Film Development Corporation (FDC). They want an independent film commission to give more control and freedom to filmmakers.
One of the main demands is to repeal laws that limit freedom of speech. Filmmakers believe this will encourage creativity and free expression.
Other proposals include forming a Film Finance Corporation to help fund movies and completing the long-pending Kabirpur Film City project.
The agenda also focuses on better film education, ensuring world-class training for filmmakers, and improving digital film distribution.
The roadmap addresses environmental concerns, calling for eco-friendly filmmaking
practices.
It also highlights the need for international partnerships and cultural exchanges, which could open doors for co-productions with other countries.
Security for filmmakers, especially those whose films touch on sensitive issues, is another key point.
The filmmakers want to protect those who face backlash for their work.
This 24-point agenda aims to give Bangladeshi filmmakers more opportunities, protections, and the ability to make films with greater freedom and creativity.
