Fight the pandemic in a coordinated manner

Five members of Bangladesh Police have died in the country after contracting COVID-19, at least 854 police personnel have tested positive for the disease and 1,250 others, who were in close contacts with infected ones, have been put in quarantine as of Sunday.

Through the media the nation has been observing how police members, putting their lives at risk, are working to keep people safe and out of risk since the pandemic started in the early March.

Two doctors have so far died and many nurses are reportedly found as coronavirus positive. It needs no emphasising that the frontline fighters are doing their duty putting themselves at high risk of being infected with COVID-19.

Our on-duty police team do not care about the risk of being affected by the deadly virus. They are working relentlessly to save the lives of their fellow citizens. Our Army, police, BGB and other agencies are working day and night. It is known to us all that how risky the job of our Army, BGB, police and other law enforcement agencies is. Accepting the risk as a part of their life and job, they work without making any questions. But we, the general people, who are considered the main source of power of the country, should be more responsible in helping them do their duties.

Our duty officers and personnel are repeatedly saying that people are not obeying the government's lockdown and thus putting their lives at risk. Human beings are said to be the best of the creatures, and if so we have to behave like the best creature.

Almost every day we find reports that big portions of doctors are reluctant to provide service to the patients. It is highly immoral for a doctor, who should be dedicated to the service of the ailed people. That a doctor is afraid of getting infected with coronavirus sounds so disappointing and disgusting too. Our captains must not behave this way. Titanic captain tried his best to save his passengers but did not do anything to save himself. Rather, he denied the request of his colleagues to save his own life. When the Titanic was finally sinking in the Atlantic, he went to his room and closed it so that none of his colleagues can try to bring him out of danger. Why he did it? Because he knew that in such a cold weather, only a few people would get the chance to survive. This is what those who are at the service of the people do in the time of danger. They do not care for themselves; they care for the people.

Some people have the observation that the pro-BNP doctors and nurses are in a plot to put the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in an awkward situation as the BNP could not do any harm to the government by spreading rumours.

People understand that because of their undemocratic and violent politics, the BNP and Jamaat are trying to fish in troubled waters as they cannot keep politics above the national interest. They should not exploit the present crisis for political millage.

Though I am not ready to believe that a party, which, somehow or other, have ruled the country can carry on such anti-people activities. Opposition should try to find out flaws in the government measures to keep the government away from wrongdoing. The ruling party and the well-informed people allege that the pro-BNP physicians’ body, Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), is trying to create problems for the government using this coronavirus pandemic. This is a cruel exercise. If it is true, no doubt it will bring more danger to them.

It is a national calamity. Nobody will be spared whoever he or she is. Corona does not have any relation with the AL, BNP, Jamaat or any other party. So let us get united and fight the century’s worst health hazards in a coordinated and coherent manner.
