A ferry carrying 116 passengers capsized off the coast of Guyana on Sunday, prompting a major search and rescue operation, according to local media reports.


The vessel overturned near Iron Punt while travelling from the capital, Georgetown, to the northwestern town of Port Kaituma.

Rescue teams, including members of the Guyana Coast Guard and other emergency services, were deployed to the scene after the incident was reported.

According to the reports, at least 53 people had been rescued by Sunday, while efforts were continuing to locate and assist the remaining passengers. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether there were any fatalities or injuries.
