Due to incessant rainfall for several days and the on-rush of water from the upper riparian hills, the water level of various rivers in the Kishoreganj Haor areas was increasing resulting problem in the movement of ferries.  Amid the situation, the roads connecting the ferries and the ferry ghats were shifted several times but that was not working as well. As a result, the authorities of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) have suspended the movement of ferries from Sunday (25 May) morning snapping the communication to the Haors with the district town.

Shakil Mohammad Faisal, Executive Engineer of RHD, Kishoreganj, confirmed the incident of stoppage of the ferry movement. He said the roads connecting the ferry ghats were inundated, as a result, all six ferry services used to travel through the haors have been suspended. The pontoons of the ferries would also be removed within next 2-3 days.

RHD sources informed, the connecting roads with the Balikhola, Chamraghat of Karimganj, Shantipur of Mithamain, Boribari of Itna and Raldha have been inundated. As a result, the ferry services were suspended.

Faarmer Mofazzal Mia and Rice trader Shamsuddin informed they were in great trouble for the incessant rain and a sudden spate in water of the river water. Earlier, we travelled through ferries but the ferry services were suspended due to increase in water of the river. As a result, we are being forced to travel in boats by risking our lives.

According to sources, on January 26, 2020, the Department of Roads and Highways introduced six ferries in various rivers to ease the movement of the Haor people to the district towns.

Sajjad Hossain, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, Kishoreganj said, the water in the Haor region was increasing daily but the water level is still under 361 centimetre below the danger point. The water is increasing mainly due to the incessant rainfall for the last several days, he added.
