The harassment of passengers has ended as a ferry service on the Boromachua east -Rayenda route on the the Baleshwar River in Sharankhola Upazila of Bagerhat was introduced.

Member of Parliament (MP) from Bagerhat-4 constituency HM Badiuzzaman Sohag and Shamim Shahnewaj, Member of Parliament (MP) from Pirojpur-3 constituency jointly took the decision to launch the ferry service on the route at a meeting held on February 22.

Mathbaria Upazila Chairman Reaz Uddin Ahmed, Sarankhola Upazila Chairman Raihan Uddin Shanto, Sharankhola Upazila Awami League President Azmal Hossain Mukta, General Secretary Asaduzzaman Milon and General Secretary of Mathbaria Upazila AL Ashrafur Rahman, among others, were present.

According to the decision, the two ghats will not be leased out after the end of the tenure.  From February 23, two ferries have been introduced to carry passengers to and from the ghats from early morning to the evening daily.

It is learnt that earlier the lessees of the ghats and their agents realised a charge of Tk 100 from each passenger and often they charged Tk 200 to 300 to the passengers for carrying bags or goods.

The passengers were harassed regularly by the lessees and their agents. By introducing the ferries, the age-old harassment of the passengers will come to an send.
