At least five people were killed in two separate road crashes at Demra in the capital and Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, on Thursday.
A female police constable is among the road crash victims. She was killed in Savar.
However, at least four other people were killed when a bus hit a small passenger vehicle, locally called leguna, at Demra in the capital. They were all passengers on the leguna. Two others were injured in the road crash that took place at about 10:00 am.
The deceased were identified as Asif Hossain, 45, Umme Habiba, 15, Shamsunnahar, 52, and Abul Hossain, 30. Asif was an employee of IFIC Bank in Demra area.
Rima Biswas, wife of Asif Hossain, told the media that they both left for work in the morning. She rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after receiving the news of her husband’s death.
Two of the injured, identified as Shameem, 37, and Moinuddin, 36, were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with serious injuries.
The bus ploughed into the passenger vehicle in front of the Berger Paints office in Demra, said Inspector (Operation) of Demra Police Station Subrata Poddar.
The police official said that the victims were rescued and taken to the DMCH following the road crash. The on duty doctors declared three of them dead on arrival at the hospital.
Abul Hossain died while undergoing treatment, said Bachchu Mia, In-charge (inspector) of Dhaka Medical Outpost.
Inspector Subrata Poddar said the leguna was carrying 12-13 passengers.
On the other hand, the victim of Savar road crash was killed and her husband injured after a bus hit their motorcycle on the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Hemayetpur bus stand.
The deceased, Afsana Akhter, was a constable of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn-11) of Mirpur-14 in Dhaka, Sheikh Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Highway Police Station, confirmed the matter to the media.
OC Hasan said that after Afsana completed her duty in Uttara area in the capital. She along with her husband was going towards her sister’s house in Kalampur on a motorcycle.
When they reached Hemayetpur bus stand area at about 3:00pm, a speeding bus of Selfie Paribahan hit their motorcycle from behind.
As both of them fell on the road, Afsana was run over by the bus and died on the spot. Her husband was taken to the hospital. Police recovered the body from the spot, said the OC.
