Feeder vessels being cut and sold in scrap rod prices

Published : 14 Mar 2023 08:48 PM

Large mother vessels carrying wheat, corn, pulses, sugar, salt, various food products, fertilizers, cement clinker, coal, stone from different countries of the world cannot enter Chattogram port.  These ships stay at the outer anchorage of Chattogram port.  The goods are unloaded from the mother vessel at outer anchorage through Feeder vessel ships and supplied to various regions of the country including various Ghats of the Karnaphuli River.

The cargo handling pressure of the port is not the same as before.  There is a fear of creating a crisis in the country's internal shipping routes.  Due to the fall in fares, there has been an urge to cut down on the Feeder vessel engaged in transporting goods on domestic routes in the wake of the rise in scrap iron prices.  Over 400 feeder vessel ships have been cut and scrapped in the last two months.  Feeder vessel for cargo transportation will not be available if the current situation continues.  Emphasis has been laid on the government's measures to prevent ship crisis.  The ship owners' association will go on strike on March 18.  It is known that from the over side of ships berthed at Chattogram Port, goods are unloaded in feeder vessel ships and supplied to various regions of the country.  The inland shipping sector is very important in sustaining the country's supply network.  The internal market system of the country is largely dependent on this sector.  Traders in this sector have expressed fear that the crisis in the feeder vessel ship sector could completely break the country's supply chain.

This sector is in dire straits.  Especially since the country's imports are decreasing, the lighterage ship sector is going towards extreme crisis for the past few days.  The ships were not getting the required fares. Feeder vessel ships sector has a very important contribution in not only delivering goods, but also in transporting goods at cost-effective prices.  In the last two months there has also been a case of non-receipt of fare for one trip.  Many ship owners find themselves in dire straits while paying seamen's wages and paying interest on bank loans.  The ship sits idle in the river Karnaphuli.  Some ships are occasionally chartered.  In the midst of this crisis, the price of scrap iron in the country has started to rise.  For the past few days, scrap iron is being sold at a price of more than 76,000 taka per ton.  Most of the feeder vessel ships were built when iron was cheap.  Plate-built ships bought for an average of Tk 40,000 are now being sold at double the price.  In this situation, one by one the ships are being cut off.  More than 400 ships owned by various companies in Dhaka and Chattogram have been cut and sold to re-rolling mills.  Lighterage vessels were seen floating idly in the Karnaphuli river.

Mohammad Nurul Haque, Secretary of Bangladesh Cargo Vessel Owners Association and Convener of Lighterage Vessel Regulatory Body Water Transport Cell (WTC), said the current situation is getting worse.  One by one, the ships are cut off.  The sector will be destroyed without government support to protect it.  Action must be taken now to save this sector from destruction.  Urged the government to take urgent action on the matter

Ship owners are profiting by scrapping ships importers said that cheaply bought scrap is now sold at a high price to raise capital and profit.  No cargo ships are available during the time of need.  Then there will be crisis in this sector as before.  Shipping costs will increase, increasing the cost of transportation of goods.  Which should be provided by the common consumers.
