In a complaint to the civil surgeon, health officer and upazila nirbahi officer, Anwar Hossain a villager of Natore district, stated that on a Bagatipara upazila health complex doctor’s advice, he had given blood samples at Safe Life Diagnostic Centre on July 18 and its report mentioned the blood sugar level is 16.4.
Anwar Hossain received slight injuries at his leg. Therefore, the physician of the health complex advised Anwar to conduct a blood sugar test to determine the amount of glucose in the blood before treatment, according to media reports.
Usually blood sugar test is run on an injured patient to understand the condition before treatment. It may be used to diagnose diabetes or to help those with diabetes check their blood sugar and insulin levels.
Later Anwar visited the physician of the health complex and submitted the test report.
According to the test report, the physician gave Anwar a prescription and some advices, asking him to purchase the medicines immediately as his diabetic condition is serious.
But Anwar did not have enough money to purchase the medicine that time. So, he had to return home without medicines. But his family members got confused as they could not believe that Anwar’s blood sugar level could cross 16.
Later, they rushed him (Anwar) to Natore Diabetic Hospital to conduct his blood sugar test again. Natore Diabetic Hospital’s report says Anwar blood sugar level is only 5.4.
It is the responsibility of the health
ministry to monitor whether
the private hospitals and clinics are equipped
with modern laboratory facilities
or not
Physicians need to carry out more study on patients before identifying them as diabetic patients or other diseases. If Anwar would purchase the medicines and take those as per doctor’s prescription, his health condition might have deteriorated fast.
The government will have to setup laboratory at upazial level, which will conduct various medical and diagnostic tests as well as laboratory research accurately. It is the responsibility of the health ministry to monitor whether the private hospitals and clinics are equipped with modern laboratory facilities and latest state of the sophisticated technologies as well.
We see a mushroom growth of private clinics, hospitals and diagnostic centres across the country. Of them some provide good services while many others are unable to do that. And even many are being operated without physicians and licence.
Apart from these, various charges at different clinics, hospitals and diagnostic centres are also causing harassment for people every day. On the other hand, many patients have also allegedly died due to wrong treatment or doctor’s mistake in the operation theatre.
Wrong diagnosis, faulty treatment and shortage of qualified physicians at private hospitals and clinics turned many healthy people into patients in the past. Such death game at private hospitals and clinics cannot be continued in a modern world.
The authorities concerned must inquire as to why the private hospitals are providing wrong treatment to patients.
