A court in Bogura has sentenced a man to death for raping his daughter. The court also fined him Tk 2 lakh.
Judge Maruf Hossain of the Bogura Children’s Repression Tribunal, who is also a district and sessions judge, pronounced the verdict at around 10:30am on Thursday.
The condemned, Abdul Khalek, 51, is a resident of Bagara Basti area in Sherpur upazila. He was present in court when the verdict was delivered.
Advocate Ali Asgar, public prosecutor of the Bogura Children’s Repression Tribunal, confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, the victim’s mother, the accused’s second wife, filed a case against her husband on October 31, 2020. The child lived in a rented house with her father and stepmother, the accused’s third wife.
On October 21, at around 4:30am, the stepmother went to a local rice mill to boil paddy, as she did every day. At that time, the accused allegedly raped his daughter and threatened her with consequences if she disclosed the incident.
Following the incident, the child’s behaviour changed and she stopped doing household chores. Angered by this, her stepmother began beating her. At one point, the child told her stepmother about the incident. However, refusing to believe the allegation against her husband, the stepmother allegedly increased the abuse.
Seeking relief from the abuse, the child told two of her classmates about the incident. Local residents subsequently learned about it through them and informed the police.
Advocate Ali Asgar said that after examining all the evidence and testimonies, the court sentenced the sole accused to death and fined him Tk 2 lakh. #EK
