Father sells newborn due to poverty in Rajshahi

Being frustrated by utter poverty, a hapless father sold his two-day old girl child from a local nursing home under Rajpara police station on November-12. 

However, being informed, Rajpara thana police rescued the child and took her along with her father to the police custody.

The father was identified as Rahidul(40), a resident of Silinda area under Rajpara police station. He is a day labourer by profession. He sold his two-day old daughter for Tk. 24,000. Police came to learn of the incident on Friday (Nov-18). Police called Rahidul to the thana. Police also called the customer of the child Shahanur Rahman to the thana.

Police informed, Rahidul has one more son and a daughter who are 10 and 12 years old respectively. On Nov-10, Jannatul Khatun, wife of Rahidul gave birth to another girl child at local Care Nursing Home. Rahidul sold the child from this nursing home. Finding her child missing, Jannatul started to weep at her home when one of her neighbours informed the police about the incident. Police called Rahidul and Shahanur to the thana and took them to the police custody.

Rahidul informed to the police that he sold the child at Tk 24,000 due to utter poverty.

The customer of the child, Shahanur informed his sister has no child, that is why he purchased the child for his sister. He also took the child to one of his relatives at Kakonhat under Godagari upazila. Later, Rajpara thana police rescued the child from Kakonhat. 

Golam Ashraf Sarker, Director of Care Nursing Home informed that he did not know that the child was sold by his father from the nursing home.  

ASM Siddikur Rahman, Officer-in-charge of Rajpara police station informed police went to rescue the child from Kakonhat and details in this connection would be said after the child is rescued.
