The water level of Jamuna River at Bhuyapur in Tangail has been rising due to the onrush upstream water from the hills of India and torrential rain. The farmers of Char areas of Jamuna are worried as they are at the risk of flood. Moreover, the people who are living on the bank of the river are at fear of river erosion.
According to Tangail Water Development Board, the water level of Jamuna River has increased by 20 centimeters at Porabari point in Tangail and the water level of Jhinai River has risen by 68 centimeters at Jokarchar point in 24 hours from 9:00am Monday to 9:00am Tuesday.
Besides, the water level of Dhaleshwari river increased by 42 centimeters at Elasin point. The water of Fatikjani River rose by 10 centimeters at Nolchapa point. The water level of Bongshai River has risen by 3 centimeters at Kauljani point and 14 centimeters at Modhupur point. The measurement meter of the water development board is temporarily shut at Jugni regulator point of Dhaleshwari river and Bhuyapur regulator point of Fatikjani river.
While visiting Gobindasi and Char areas of Nikrail union under Bhuapur Upazila of the district on Tuesday, it was seen that several croplands of paddy, peanut and Mashkalai went under water as the water level of the rivers increased. Erosion started again in Char areas. As a result, the farmers of the Char area are in problem.
Peanut farmers of Kalipur village of Gabsara, Aleem, Amir Hamja and Sobhan Mondol, said several small and big Char rose in the area around one month ago as the water of the river receded. We planted peanut and Mashkali plants there. Peanut and Mashkalai of some low-lying areas inundated as water level have increased for the last few days.
Meanwhile, many houses on the bank of the river at Gobidabasi and Nikrail unions went under water as the water of Jamuna River increased. The people of the riverbanks experienced erosion due to sand lifting and sand unloading by bulkhead near Jamuna Bridge Protect Guide Dam. Still the illegal sand lifting has not stopped.
Tangail District Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md Sazzat Hossain said all the rivers of the district, including Jamuna River, were flowing under the danger level. However, there is no fear of flood. Legal measures will be taken against those who loaded and unloaded sand breaking the Guide Dam and shifting geo-bags.
