The number of coronavirus cases is increasing in Sunamganj during the harvesting seasons of Boro paddy in the haor district. Until Tuesday, the district confirmed 26 cases.

A total of 11 new coronavirus patients were detected in the district. The persons tested positive for coronavirus at the PCR lab of Sylhet Osmani Medical College on Monday. Sunamganj Civil Surgeon Dr Shams Uddin confirmed the matter.

Against this backdrop, the agricultural activities in the haor district are being hampered for scarcity of labourers and diesel as well as limited marketing opportunities amid the coronavirus situation.

Farmers in the country’s seven north-eastern districts, known as the haor region, are also in fear of losing their ripe Boro paddy to flash floods anytime as they cannot harvest the crop for the scarcity of farm labourers that usually go from other districts. In this backdrop, the farmers are harvesting their paddy at the haor rapidly.

The fears of contracting coronavirus is running rife among the people of Sunamganj following recent surge in the number of infection in the district.

After Habiganj in Sylhet division, Sunamganj district is in the second position in terms of number of infected people. The number of victims is increasing by leaps and bounds in this district.

For this surge in number of infections, many are blaming those, who are coming from Dhaka, Narayanganj and other districts as most of the victims have recently come from other districts.

According to the information, for the first time a woman was diagnosed with Covid-19 in Sunamganj during the first week of April. Things were in control for few days as no new cases were recorded in the district. However, since last Wednesday, number of infected patients began to increase.

Things started to get worrisome as on Monday Sylhet recorded 13 cases in one day. Out of the 13 people who tested positive for corona in Sylhet division on Monday, 11 of them where from different upazilas of Sunamganj.

Among them, 4 in Shalla Upazila, 3 in Doarabazar, 2 in South Sunamganj, 1 in Jagannathpur and 1 in Sadar tested positive. Sunamganj Civil Surgeon Mohammad Shams Uddin has confirmed the matter.

According to the information, 2 people have been discharged from the District Sadar Hospital among the 26 people who have been infected in Sunamganj till Monday. From them one’s home is in Doarabazar upazila.

According to the Doara Upazila Health Department, out of the 11 new corona victims, three are from Polirchar village in Pandargaon union of the upazila. All three are said to have returned to Dhaka.

The district administration announced a lockdown of the entire district a week ago, but workers and people of other professions are coming from different corona hotspot areas including Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur.

It has been learned that in Doara Sadar, Mannargaon, Pandargaon, Laxmipur, Banglabazar and other upazilas of Dohalia upazila, people are not maintaining social distancing and are gathering in public places. Despite repeated warnings from the police administration and the health department to be aware of this global pandemic, many are not complying.

Panic has spread in the village as three people from the same area were infected in Pandargaon Union. However, the health department is promoting the importance of proper isolation.
