Farmers in Joypurhat are eyeing to benefit from fish farming in cages in the Chhoto Jamuna river in Panchbibi upazila of district due to its low cost and easy maintenance.

Two local fishermen, Saiful Islam and Alam Hossain had recently started fish farming in cages on the river flows on the western side of Panchbibi municipality. According to them, they are eyeing how to take benefit from it. Fisherman Anwarul Islam said that water in the middle of the flowing river remains clear round the year with low possibility of spreading disease or pest attack.

“Since an experiment on fish cage farming becomes successful, we have taken initiative to do it commercially,” he added. He said fish farming in cages in the river water require less food and cause almost no disease. Fish grows fast and can be marketed in a very short time. With the help of the government, expansion of fish cage farming is possible, he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of divisional fisheries department Tofaz Uddin Ahmed visited the project. The official assured the farmers of making all necessary arrangements they will need for it. District fisheries officer Sarder Mohiuddin, Sadar upazila fisheries officer Nur Nabi, and fisheries extension officer Shafiqul Islam accompanied Ahmed during the visit.
