Farmers busy cutting paddy, planting potato

There is a rush to harvest Aman paddy in advance in Kishoreganj and surrounding areas of Nilphamari. They have come down to pick up the Aman paddy from the fields. Farmers are smiling because of good yield and price. On the other hand, potato farmers are working hard in the field to plant potatoes in advance.

Due to the high soil quality of the region, the vast crop fields of this area are full of greenery throughout the year. The Department of Agriculture said that the farmers are benefiting financially as there are three to four crops in the lands throughout the year. Early harvesting of paddy and planting of potatoes in advance carries the message of early winter, farmers said.

The farmers have started threshing and drying the Aman paddy in advance at all over the field. Besides, threshing and drying of paddy is going on smoothly due to the sunny weather. Due to favorable weather, bumper yield of Aman paddy has been achieved earlier this year. The price is also quite acceptable for farmers.

Potato farmers on the other hand are busy planting potatoes in advance in these lands after harvesting paddy. In this area, early potatoes have gained a reputation as a profitable crop. Already many potato growers have started planting potatoes in the hope of getting good prices. Early harvesting of paddy and planting of potatoes in advance seems to have brought the message of winter in advance. The tradition of Bengali culture is emerging in the houses of rural areas by threshing Aman paddy in advance. Early harvesting of paddy, early harvest preparation, planting of potatoes in advance, early winter message seems to be all in advance.

According to the Agriculture Office, Aman paddy has been cultivated in 14,785 hectares of land in the upazila earlier this year. Aman paddy has been harvested in advance in the field. Farmers are busy planting potatoes in advance in these lands. On the other hand, the target for early potato cultivation this year has been set at 4,450 hectares of land.

It was seen on the spot on Thursday that farmers are harvesting Aman paddy in advance in different places of Bahagili, Putimari, Kalikapur and Ranchandi areas. 

Last Thursday afternoon, the agriculture department officially announced the harvest of Aman paddy in the upazila. Abu Bakkar Siddique, Deputy Director, Depart­ment of Agricultural Exten­sion, Nilphamari, inaugurated the harvest of early Aman paddy on the land of Saidul in Ranchandi Union. Upazila Agriculture Officer Habibur Rahman, Upazila Agricul­ture Extension Officer Tushar Kanti Roy and others were present at the programme.

Tushar Kanti Roy, Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer said that since the soil in the area fertile enough, the vast crop fields of the area are full of greenery throughout the year.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Habibur Rahman said potato is a popular and lucrative crop in Kishoreganj upazila. Officials are hopeful that the yield of early potatoes will be good and the price will be good.
