In an inspiring agricultural success story from Bauphal in Patuakhali, young entrepreneur Md Lokman Hossain has achieved remarkable results by cultivating watermelon during the monsoon season using the mulching method on elevated land. Due to the low production cost, high yield, and excellent market price, Lokman is pleased with the outcome. His success has sparked interest among other farmers in the area to explore off-season watermelon farming.
Lokman Hossain hails from Charwadell village in Chandradwip Union. An educated youth, he moved abroad eight years ago in search of work but returned three years ago and began farming alongside his father. Traditionally, watermelon is cultivated in the summer season, but Lokman decided to try growing it during the rainy season for the first time, using a small plot in his backyard. Alongside watermelon, he also grew a local fruit called "phuti". His initial venture proved both cost-effective and highly successful.
A visit to his farm reveals rows of watermelon plants growing under plastic mulch, with vines spreading and fruits thriving. The plants are full of flowers and young fruits, and vibrant green leaves surround the juicy melons peeking through. The adjacent phuti plants are also bearing fruit abundantly. Lokman tends to the crops with care, supported by his father.
Speaking about his journey, Lokman shared, “In 2017, I moved to Brunei for work. The job there was physically demanding. I realised that with less effort, I could earn more by farming back home. So I returned and joined my father in agriculture. In addition to paddy, we began cultivating vegetables and fruits on unused land near our house. This year, I experimentally planted hybrid watermelon and phuti on just five decimals of land. The results have been excellent. As pest infestation is low during the monsoon, pesticide costs were minimal, which meant higher profits. I spent only 20,000 taka and earned nearly 100,000 taka in returns.”
His father, Salam Gazi, added, “I’ve been a farmer all my life. My son went abroad after completing his studies, but he couldn’t achieve much there. Since returning, he’s found real success through farming. This year’s watermelon harvest has been very promising. We plan to expand cultivation next year.”
Word of Lokman's success has spread quickly, attracting visitors from nearby areas. Inspired by him, other unemployed youths and farmers are considering off-season watermelon cultivation.
Local farmer Md Ripon Hossain (32) said, “We usually grow watermelon during the regular season, but I’ve never seen it done in the monsoon before. After seeing Lokman’s success, I plan to try it myself next year.”
Bauphal Upazila Agriculture Officer, Agriculturist Md Milon, commented, “Off-season watermelon farming is highly profitable due to low pest attacks and high demand in the market. We’re pleased by Lokman’s success and will provide him with full support through our department.”
