A five-foot-long venomous Russell's Viper was netted by a farmer at Baultali village under Dhulasar Union of Kalapara Upazila in Patuakhali on Monday.

The snake was netted in a pond of the farmer, Nur Haolader, at around 11:00am. The farmer hit the snake with a stick and put it in a plastic jar.

A large number of people thronged the village to see the snake. However, the members of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali in Kalapara were trying to rescue the snake.

The farmer said that his wife first spotted the snake in their net. Later, she informed it to him. He hit the snake with a stick and put it in a plastic jar. However, it is still alive. If anyone from the forest department comes, he will give it to him, he added.

Shahin Chakidar, resident of Noakata village, who came to see the snake, said, “This is the first time I am seeing Russell’s Viper snake. Earlier, I saw the footage of the snake in Youtube and facebook. It is a venomous snake.”

Team member of Kalapara unit of Animal Lovers of Patuakhali, Bayzid Munshi, said one of our teams is going to the spot. We will rescue the snake and hand it over to the forest department after giving primary treatment.

He asked everyone to inform them seeing the snake instead of getting panicked. He also asked people to go to nearby government hospital if the snake bites anyone.
