Family planning cuts maternal mortality: Speakers

Proper and long-term family planning after delivery reduces maternal mortality. 30 percent of maternal deaths and 10 percent of child deaths can be avoided if children are adopted at intervals of more than two years. In low-income countries like Bangladesh, one out of every three children has an unintended pregnancy within two years of giving birth. Through the implementation of the project conducted by Jhpiego Bangladesh, it has been seen that the maternal mortality rate is reduced if proper family planning is followed after delivery.

Speakers presented this information at the national level workshop of the project “Accelerating Postnatal Family Planning” implemented by Jhpiego Bangladesh on Monday in the capital. Health Education and Family Welfare Department Secretary Saiful Hasan Badal was present as the chief guest on the occasion. Jhpiego Bangladesh Country Head Dr Shahan Ara Banu, Director General of Family Planning Department, also spoke at the workshop. Setara Rahman, Program Manager Mohammad Tariqul Islam, Family Planning Department Line Director Dr Nurun Nahar Begum and others were present at the programme.

Speaking as the chief guest at the event, the health secretary said that Jhpiego’s contribution in ensuring the availability of post-natal family planning is commendable. He said, if couples adopt children after a period of more than two years, 30 percent of maternal deaths and 10 percent of infant deaths can be avoided. Globally, in low-income countries like Bangladesh, 1 in 3 children experience an unintended pregnancy within two years of giving birth. 90 percent of post-partum mothers want to delay having their next child but face various complications due to lack of proper post-partum planning.

It can be seen from the survey, while the rate of adoption of postnatal planning is only 7.7% in the country, the rate of adoption of the plan in the project area of Jhpiego is 12%. Successful field level officials were announced as PPFP Champions for their commendable contribution in unexpected activities.

  Speakers on the occasion praised Jhpiego Bangladesh for the development of post-natal family planning system in Bangladesh. Under the project, Jhpiego Bangladesh in slum areas of Dhaka city and 4 Sadar hospitals of Feni, Chandpur, Brahmanbaria, Moulvibazar districts, 12 upazila health complexes including 20 service centers, infrastructure development, development of apps in joint initiative, training of doctors and nurses, awareness campaign. 

which is playing a groundbreaking role in improving the health of the country's maternity and post-natal mothers. 

Through this, the speakers expressed optimism that it is possible to meet the target of bringing down the maternal mortality rate due to complications during childbirth to 70 by the year 2030 announced by the government.
