The family nutrition garden established on the occasion of Mujib Centenary Agricultural Festival at Chirirbandar in Dinajpur is becoming popular day by day.

The family nutrition garden is being set up in Chirirbandar upazila to ensure maximum utilization of every inch of agricultural land to keep the country self-sufficient in food in response to disasters as per the directives given by the Prime Minister.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, when the whole country was in lockdown to prevent coronavirus, there was an extreme crisis in various issues including supply and production of vegetables.

This family nutrition garden has been set up in the houses of 384 farmers in 12 unions of the upazila. This garden is already being created in most homes. With the variety of non-toxic vegetables produced in each family nutrition garden, the farmers will be able to earn extra money by meeting their needs and marketing additional vegetables.

Due to which there will not be any kind of vegetable crisis in the upazila during emergency. With that goal in mind, the Department of Agricultural Extension, Chirirbandar Upazila, Dinajpur, has been working to create a family nutrition garden. In this way, farmers will be able to become self-sufficient in vegetable production as well as be financially self-sufficient.

Manik Hossain, a farmer from Balapara village in Nasratpur UP, said, “With the overall cooperation of the agriculture office, I have created a family nutrition garden in the fallow land next to my house. I have also received assistance from the government for the cost of creating this garden. I have benefited a lot. Upazila Agriculture Officer in this regard. Mahmudul Hasan said that this family nutrition garden is being created as an alternative way so that the farmers do not face any loss during various emergencies. We first enlightened the farmers.

I am making the farmers aware of the benefits of gardening. However, at present this family nutrition garden has aroused a wide response among the farmers of the upazila. We have provided 16 types of vegetable seeds free of cost in each garden. I hope that in the future a family nutrition garden will be created in every house of the upazila. We are 100% hopeful that this will not create any vegetable crisis in the upazila during any emergency.
