Family members of Shahida Alam Sumana claimed that Sumona was killed following torture. They demanded trial of the murder.   They raised the demand at a press conference in Gopalganj Press Club on Friday.

Sumana’s handicapped mother Razia Alam alleged that her daughter did not commit suicide, she was murdered and later her body was hung with a fan at her father in law’s house at East Miyapara of the city.

Razia’s eldest son’s wife Taspia Islam read a written statement on her behalf. She alleged that in 2016, her daughter Sumana got married to Karim Sardar (Sajib), son of Idris Sardar of East Miyapara in Gopalganj district town.

Since the marriage, Sumana’s husband alongside her in-laws used to abuse her physically and mentally for notgiving dowry. On April 28, her husband’s family members informed Sumana’s mother by phone that her daughter committed suicide.

She quickly went to the spot with her family members and saw SI Murad Hossain of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station. ASI Monir and his fellow policemen locked the gate and cordoned off the house. ThenSumana’s family members were not allowed to enter the house, and were also not allowed to see the girl’s face.

Police officer Murad Hossain offered them to take the body and said there was no need to file any case and conduct autopsy, it would be better to bury the body. When they objected to take the body without autopsy, SI Murad got angry with them.

Razia Alam also said in her written statement, “Police threatened us to take the body without autopsy. Besides, how did the police officer confirm before the autopsy that my daughter had committed suicide? We believe that SI Murad Hossain and officer Kabir took bribe from the killers and let them elope.

Finally, the autopsy was completed with the intervention of Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Mohammad Aslam Khan.”

Sumana's mother Razia Alam, brother Rajiv Munshi, Sajib Munshi, aunt Lipi Begum and other family members were present at the press conference demanded a proper investigation and exemplary punishment for the culprits.

They sought the intervention of the higher authorities of the police including the Hon'ble Prime Minister to get justice.
