Family members of a coronavirus victim, who died in a hospital as a prisoner of Sylhet Central Jail, have alleged that false and fabricate information were provided on the burial of the person.
The deceased’s brother brought the allegation against the jail authorities that it lied about burial of jail inmate Ahmed Hossain, who died of coronavirus on May 10.
Anwar Hossain, younger brother of the deceased, said that the Sylhet Central Jail authorities lied about the burial of Ahmed Hossain of Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet.
He claimed that the statement made by the jail authorities that the family of the deceased had not accepted his body was a blatant lie.
Anwar claimed that his family had tried to bury Ahmed Hossain and four members of the family took part in the janaza and burial.
In a status on social media, he said that, his elder brother Ahmed Hossain was arrested on March 5 in a murder case and taken to Sylhet Central Jail. He was admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on May 8 after he fell ill.
Later, he was shifted to Shamsuddin Hospital with symptoms of coronavirus. He died on May 10. After his death, his body was kept at Osmani Hospital. On May 12, the test report came, and it was known that Ahmed Hossain was corona positive.
Anwar also said that despite repeated requests, the authorities refused to give the body to family members. The body was handed over to the family, but according to the instructions of the authorities, they could not take the body home and instead buried him in the Manik Pir graveyard in Sylhet city.
Anwar Hossain said that all the arrangements for burying the body were completed by the family. Only one man from the prison cooperated with the family.
He alleged that the jail superintendent had humiliated his family by spreading such baseless lies. He said they have paid the bills from their own pockets for autopsy, car rental and grave digging.
