Abdus Salam, Dinajpur
An increase in the supply of early winter vegetables has brought down prices in Dinajpur’s local markets, offering relief to consumers but raising concerns among farmers over recovering production costs.
The trend was observed at Bahadur Bazar and other vegetable markets in the city on Saturday (3 October 2026).
Market visits showed increased supplies of red amaranth, spinach, radish greens, cabbage, cauliflower, French beans, radish, carrot, tomato, turnip, beetroot, capsicum and other vegetables.
Imported green chillies were selling at Tk 90–100 per kg and locally produced ones at Tk 130–140, down Tk 20–30 per kg from the previous week.
Potatoes were selling at Tk 16–30 per kg depending on variety, onions at Tk 40–45, brinjals at Tk 50–70, French beans at Tk 150–160, carrots at Tk 140, tomatoes at Tk 120 and radishes at Tk 60.
Ash gourds were selling at Tk 40 each, green bananas at Tk 30 per four, while cauliflower and cabbage were priced at Tk 150 and Tk 60 respectively.
Vendors at Bahadur Bazar said there had been a bumper harvest of early vegetables across the district. As supplies to wholesale markets were high, they were buying at lower prices and selling with small profit margins. Prices could fall further as winter intensifies, they said.
Traders and consumers said household spending on vegetables had fallen compared with the previous week. The fall in potato prices has caused losses to importers and traders, but has provided relief to consumers.
Local farmers, however, expressed concern over the overall fall in prices. Several vegetable growers in Ghughudanga of Sadar upazila and different areas of Phulbari upazila said favourable weather had resulted in good yields from early cultivation, but current prices were making it difficult to recover production costs. They feared heavier losses if prices fell further during the peak season.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (Dinajpur) office, a target was set to cultivate early winter vegetables on more than 7,150 hectares in the district’s 13 upazilas this season. Favourable weather has led to cultivation on more land than targeted, while overall production has also been better than expected. #EK
