This time high quality yarn will be produced from the fallen leaves of the pineapple plant. Recently, an organization called Agro Vision has found such evidence by inspecting some pineapple orchards in Moulvibazar and examining the leaves in Dhaka. The Department of Agriculture is looking at the possibility of producing good yarn. Fiber extracted from pineapple leaves is being exported to the Netherlands, the sources said.

Chairman of Agro Vision Rajib Dev said that a lot of pineapple is cultivated in Srimangal, Kamalganj, Kulaura and Baralekha of Moulvibazar. And after cutting the pineapple from these pineapple trees, the tree does not bear new fruit. Most of the leaves of that pineapple tree have to be cut off. But once the pineapple is caught, the yarn can be made from the abandoned leaves. They have found such evidence in the test.

He added that he had recently come to Srimangal with a Japanese consultant as there were many gardens in the district. They visited various pineapple orchards in Srimangal and talked to several pineapple orchard owners and workers. They are optimistic about the initial inspection and observation. He thinks that a yarn factory could be set up using abandoned pineapple leaves as raw material.

According to the Japanese consultant team of Agro Vision, looking at the leaves of the pineapple tree in Moulvibazar, it seems that it will be possible to produce high quality yarn. The team collected about 50 kg of pineapple leaves through pineapple growers Kazi Shamsul Haque and Jalil Khan and took them to Dhaka. This pineapple leaf has got good fiber after completing the initial test there. After thorough examination, a yarn factory can be set up centered on pineapple leaves. Pineapple yarn is very smooth. Fabrics made from this yarn will be comfortable.

In this regard, lemon and pineapple grower Jalil Khan said that the team of Japanese consultants has visited pineapple orchards in several areas including Mahajerabad, Bishamani, Duluchhara and Radhanagar through Agro Vision. During the inspection of the garden, the Japanese consultant broke the tip of the pineapple and showed its fibers. They said that the possibility of making yarn from which is bright.

Pineapple grower Kazi Shamsul Haque said a full-grown pineapple tree has 36 leaves. A tree bears fruit only once. After cutting the pineapple, at least 15/20 leaves of the tree are cut off. Most of these pineapple leaves are discarded. Some people take some leaves for cattle.

In this regard, Srimangal Agriculture Officer Nilufar Yasmin Munalisa Sweety said that last March, the Deputy Director (Deputy Secretary) of the Department of Agricultural Marketing, Dr Raju Ahmed, collected pineapple leaves from Srimangal. He later tested it and said that it was suitable for making yarn. Work is already underway in Madhupur on a project. If Agro Vision sets up a yarn factory in Srimangal, then all kinds of cooperation will be provided by the Department of Agriculture. And pineapple growers will benefit if yarn is made from pineapple leaves.

Moulvibazar District Agriculture Extension Department Deputy Director Kazi Lutful Bari said pineapple has been cultivated in 1202 hectares of land in Moulvibazar district this year. Its production target is 20,600 metric tons. Along with this there are about 500 farmers involved. If Agro Vision or anyone else takes the initiative to make yarn from pineapple leaves, then these farmers will get some additional income opportunities and this will encourage them to increase pineapple cultivation in the area.

Dr Raju Ahmed, Deputy Director (Deputy Secretary) of the Department of Agricultural Marketing, said that the examination process has been started in Tangail six months ago. Pineapple leaf fiber is already being exported to the Netherlands. In the factory of Tangail, good fiber is also made from the leaves of Srimangal. The yarn making machine requires three feet long leaves. Now the big leaves are being used. The quality of the yarn produced from this leaf is comparatively much better than other yarns. If the whole process can be done in Bangladesh then pineapple cultivation will increase, employment opportunities will be created, yarn production in the country will increase and the government will also get revenue.
