A man posing as a member of the Bangladesh Police was arrested by traffic police after he was caught riding a motorcycle against the flow of traffic in Old Dhaka on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on French Road near the Noyabazar intersection, where on-duty traffic officers stopped the rider for travelling in the wrong direction.
According to police, Traffic Sergeant Kutub Uddin was monitoring traffic at the intersection when he spotted a motorcycle approaching against the designated traffic flow. He signalled the rider to stop for questioning.
During the initial inquiry, the motorcyclist claimed to be a member of the Bangladesh Police. However, he failed to produce an official identity card when asked by the traffic sergeant.
Police said the suspect was also unable to answer basic questions about his alleged police service, including details of his batch. He further failed to produce the motorcycle's registration certificate or any other valid documents.
Suspecting that the man was impersonating a police officer, Sergeant Kutub Uddin detained him and handed him over to Sub-Inspector Mohammad Shafiuddin of Bangshal Police Station for legal action.
The detainee was identified as Mohammad Zahidul Islam, also known as Zakir, 32, son of Jamir Hossain. He had been living as a tenant in Keraniganj Model Town, while his permanent home is in North Matlab upazila of Chandpur district.
Police also seized the motorcycle, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-L 35-4129, which the suspect was using at the time of his arrest.
Officials said legal proceedings have been initiated, and further investigation is underway into the alleged impersonation and any other offences he may have committed.
