Year after year we have been hit by countless fire incidents in Puran Dhaka which took lives of many. However, after various initiatives and warnings by the government these incidents are still taking place due to a lack of awareness and seriousness among factory owners and also government regulatory bodies.

Recently, the old part of Dhaka experienced another fatal fire incident in the wee hours of Friday, leaving five persons dead and two others injured. The factory is located just 100-150 yards away from the residential area of Kamalbagh. Multiple drums filled with chemicals were found on the ground floor of the two-storey building. There was also plastic and rubber used for making shoes on both floors.

Such accidents are taking place frequently in old Dhaka. Over the last few years, many areas of old Dhaka have fallen victim to such tragedies leading to horrific losses of numerous lives.

We hope the government will take such incidents

with utmost

importance

The government earlier had said that the chemical warehouse would be removed from old Dhaka after the Nimtali tragedy. However, chemical business in the capital’s old Dhaka area is still continuing despite repeated fatal accidents.

We know that even after yet another fire incident related to this shoe factory will go down unnoticed again. The owners will hardly be brought to book and the family members of the victims are unlikely to receive any justice. These remarks are easy to guess as year after year same thing is happening and no justice has been served.

We have seen enough negligence and we hope the government will take such incidents with utmost importance and ensure the safety of people on whom our economy depends.
