Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Thursday warned that the achievement of development might fade away due to violent extremism.
He made this remark while addressing a workshop titled, ‘The role of people’s representatives in resisting violent extremism’ at Nagar Bhaban in the capital.
He said all the achievements of development initiatives taken by the government of Sheikh Hasina, may fade away due to violent extremism.
Addressing the programme as the chief guest, Mayor Sayeed Khokon claimed law and order situation of Dhaka city is much better than any time.
He thanked the police especially DMP and CTTC for bringing extremism under control.
Dhaka Metropolitan Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah said, “We believe the role of people’s representatives is important, not only for curbing terrorism but also for making Dhaka safe and peaceful.”
He said militancy is currently under control. There is nothing to be worried about, but all must remain alert.
Informing that in 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced her zero tolerance policy against terrorism, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit chief Monirul Islam said many countries in the world now consider Bangladesh a role model in combating militancy. It was possible as people were united against this menace.
He further said that many countries invite him to know how Bangladesh tackled militancy after the deadly attack in Holey Artisan café.
He advised guardians to remain alert to see what their children are surfing in internet behind closed doors.
“Some vested quarters are misleading the youth giving fabricated explanation of Islam, a religion of peace, which is triggering conflict and division within society,” Manirul added.
