Excessive heat has been hampering the crop production, especially vegetables for last few weeks in Jhenaidah.
As a result, the price of all varieties of the vegetables is hiked in the market.
Jamal Uddin, a government employee in Jhenaidah kitchen market said that he purchased one kilogram of brinjal at Taka 80 which was 30 to 35 a few weeks ago.
The price of bitter gourd increased to 100 to 120 as against Taka 40 to 50, each kilogram of pointed gourd was selling at Taka 80 instead of Taka 30 to 40. The price of potato raised and was selling at Taka 55 to 60 per kilogram, which was Taka 40 a few days ago. Price of a smaller size of pumpkin was selling at Taka 50, while the mature ones at Taka 70 to 80 which was around Taka 30 earlier.
The price of green chilly also rose. Per kilogram of the spicy vegetable was selling at Taka 80. The price doubled in a few days.
Vegetable vendor Rahamat Ali said the supply of all sorts of vegetables had decreased in the market in recent days.
The growers have been saying that the yield went lower due to the severe heatwave. Huge amount of vegetables plants was drying up day by day. The respite from the hot spell might be possible if there was adequate rainfall soon. Otherwise, the situation might deteriorate and most of the vegetable plants will die due to excessive heat, Rahamat Ali said quoting the vegetables grower.
Upazila Agricultural Officer in Jhenaidah Sadar Nur E Nabi said that they have nothing to do as the heatwave was a natural process. Admitting huge effect on crops, the agricultural officer said they have no option except waiting for the rainfall in coming days.
