Expanding legal aid services to poor stressed

162 cases disposed in 13 months through Narail Legal Aid Committee

A total of 280 distressed and poor people, including women, applied for legal aid services free of cost through the district legal aid office last 13 months from May, 2018 to May, 2019. Of them 162 cases were accomplished in the time.  

The information was revealed at a meeting of District Legal Aid Committee (DLAC) of Narail. The DLAC arranged their monthly meeting at the conference room of district judge court building on Wednesday. Narail district and sessions judge and chairman of DLAC Sheikh Abdul Ahad presided over the meeting.

In his speech, Sheikh Abdul Ahad said that the entire people are equal to the eye of the law so emphasis should be given on bringing all the victimized poor people under the legal aid coverage whatever and whenever they need. The need for reaching the legal aid services to the grassroots alongside expediting the services towards the poor and distressed victims for protecting their fundamental rights, he added.

He also said that the number of applicant is increasing day by day for conducting different awareness, motivational and publicity programmes. He urged the panel lawers to settle the cases as early as possible.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Mehedi Al Masud, additional district and sessions judge Md. Hayder Ali Khondakar, joint judge and also land survey tribunal judge Syed Siraj Zinnat, senior judicial magistrate Md. Zahidul Azad and Md. Morshedul Alom, additional district magistrate Md. Bakahid Hossain, Additional Police Super Md. Sarfuddin, Jail Super Md. Mujibur Rahman Majumdar, Assistant Judge M. Habibur Rahman, judicial magistrate Nayon Baral, public prosecutor (PP) Advocate Emdadul Islam, Advocate Omar Farque, district lawyer association’s secretary Advocate Uttom Kumar Ghos, Advocate Rama Rani Roy, district BRAC representative Bivonjan Biswas among others present in the meeting.

Joint district and sessions judge and district legal aid officer Md. Hadiuzzaman said that 12 poor applied for legal aid services free of cost in May, 26 applied in June, 19 applied in July, 17 applied in August, 21 applied in September, 32 applied in October, 23 applied in November, 16 applied in December last year, while 23 applied in January, 26  applied in February, 18 applied in March, 13 applied in April and 34 distressed and poor applied in May this year for legal aid services free of cost. A total of 162 cases were accomplished in last 13 months. A total of 2126 cases of Legal Aid Services were pending under trial at the time, he said.
