Executive Committee of BUET Journalists Society dissolved

Published : 22 Apr 2024 10:03 PM

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) authorities dissolved the Executive Committee of the BUET Journalists Society.

This was announced on Sunday (April 21) through a circular signed by Dr Rupak Mutsuddy, Assistant Director of the BUET Student Welfare Department.

The circular states that it is hereby informed for the information of all concerned that, due to unavoidable reasons, the executive council 2023-24 committee of the university’s co-curricular club, BUET Journalist Society, has been declared dissolved.

It was alleged that the journalist association has carried out extremism and propaganda on the BUET campus. Six people, including the secretary of this association, are accused in the FIR of being involved in anti-state activities in Tangua Haor.

However, the BUET authorities did not take any action against the six students even though they dissolved the committee of the journalist association responsible for the unstable situation in BUET. Meanwhile, questions are being raised about the role of BUET authorities. They just dissolved the committee. However, there are demands to dissolve the journalist association. A journalist association is an association consisting of journalists. There are no journalists here, so a student club can never be called a journalist association.

Last month, a group at BUET incited general students to boycott the exams over student politics. On March 28, the president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) entered the BUET campus, and the group spread rumours that they entered to provide the BCL committee.

At that time, a student was expelled for allegedly being associated with the Chhatra League and the other students who were with him should be traced and demanded to be expelled. Along with this, the demand to maintain the ban on student politics in BUET was also expressed.

Finally, the movement’s issue reached the High Court, where the High Court said there is no obstacle to student politics in BUET.

In such a situation, before the Eid holiday, BUET Vice-Chancellor Dr Satya Prasad Majumder, on behalf of the BUET administration, announced to go to legal battle after the court verdict. However, after opening the BUET campus after Eid, some students called for an examination boycott.

Meanwhile, talking to the students involved with the BUET Journalist Society has revealed various worrying information. At least six students (now on bail) who have been arrested and charged with anti-state activities in Haor are members of this association. Sunamganj District Jamaat leaders also told the media about their affiliation during the detention. Even when they were brought to court, their lawyers were present on behalf of Jamaat-Shibir.

Six people associated with this association are accused in the Haor case. They are Md Fahadul Islam, Khalid Ammar, Tanvir Arafat Fahim, Mainuddin, Md Mahmudul Hasan and Md Sayed Adnan Opi.

Meanwhile, a statement on the official Facebook page of ‘BUET Journalist Society’ today (Monday) informed that the new Executive Council 2023-24 committee will be announced tomorrow (Tuesday).

It said that recently, the Student Welfare Department declared that the current committee of the BUET Journalist Society had dissolved, subject to the report of the internal inquiry committee.

It added that to resolve the situation, the new committee of the Executive Committee of the Journalist Society 2023-24, will be announced soon.
