Jamalpur Health Department organised took out a procession in the city on Thursday last marking the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week under the theme 'Be aware of antibiotic use, let's prevent antimicrobial resistance together'.
The procession paraded the premises of Jamalpur General Hospital and ended in front of the office of the Civil Surgeon. After the procession, an information meeting was held highlighting the significance of the day in the freedom fighter Dr Nazrul Islam hall. The meeting was presided over by Civil Surgeon Dr Pranay Kanti Das Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr Aktaruzzaman, Additional Superintendent of Police of Jamalpur Sadar Circle Sohrab Hossain, Islampur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. MA Taher, Assistant Director of District Fisheries Department Mokhleshur Rahman, Journalist Jahangir Salim, Director of Human Resource Development of Development Association spoke in the meeting among others. District Health Education Officer Khandkar Badrul Alam conducted the programme. Civil surgeon Dr. Pranoy Kanti Das said the health risks due to excessive use of antibiotics are extreme. If it is not controlled, antibiotic poisoning can become an epidemic.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sohrab Hossain urged all to work at the field level to create antimicrobial awareness and not just in speech statements.
He said that if action is taken under the existing law, the police will extend all-out cooperation and all possible assistance.
Jahangir Salim said that although millions of people die in the country every year, most people do not know that the cause of death is antibiotic poisoning. A social movement should be built against it in a concerted effort and to create awareness.
