Excavation of Buddhist city resumes in Munshiganj

Bikrampur likely to be part of world heritage

Excavations have resumed on Friday to unearth the thousand-year-old Buddhist city discovered underground at Nateshwar in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj. Researchers think that the history of Bengal will be enriched with more new discoveries. The excavations began to find more new artefacts from the ground.

Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Abul Mansur inaugurated the excavation work as the chief guest on Friday morning. After the inauguration, the guests visited the entire excavation area. At the inaugural function, Dr Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin, President of Agrasar Bikrampur Foundation presided over the discussion and Ratan Chandra Pandit, Director General of the Department of Archeology spoke at the programme. Later, the guests inaugurated a dining hall at the open museum of Bikrampuri Buddhist Monastery at Raghurampur in Sadar upazila. This restaurant is inaugurated for the convenience of tourists.

Earlier, thousands of year’s old and rare specimens were discovered. Many curious people are coming to see this event to bring out the antiquities.

Referring to Bikrampur as the capital of archeological monuments, the culture secretary said after the inauguration of the excavation work on Friday that the door of possibilities in the antiquities industry is being opened around Bikrampur.

The excavation is going on over about 10 acres of land here. Various artefacts from 70 to 1223 AD have already been discovered. This is how the excavation work is going on in search of more new patterns.
