A Dhaka court has granted bail to former Speaker of the National Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, in an attempted murder case filed with Lalbagh Police Station in connection with the anti-discrimination movement.
On Sunday (April 12), the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain granted her bail upon a defense petition, allowing release on a bond of Tk 50,000.
Earlier, on April 7 at dawn, law enforcement officers arrested Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury from a relative’s residence. She was subsequently sent to jail in connection with the case on the same day.
According to the case statement, during the anti-discrimination movement on July 18, 2024, the victim, Md. Ashraful alias Fahim, was participating in a procession inside the Azimpur Government Colony area under Lalbagh Police Station. He allegedly lost vision in his left eye after being shot by the accused during the incident.
The victim Ashraful filed the attempted murder case with Lalbagh Police Station on July 17, 2025.
