The house of former Awami League minister Mofazzal Hossain Choudhury Maya in Chandpur was vandalised, looted and set on fire by miscreants on Saturday night.
The incident took place at around 11:00pm on Saturday at the three-storey house of Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, located in Mohonpur area in Matlab Uttar upazila of the district, said Syed Muhammad Morshed Hossain, Deputy Assistant Director of the Chandpur Fire Service.
We received news of the fire at around 11.00pm and the fire service quickly responded to the spot and brought the fire under control, he said
Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Matlab Uttar police station Pradip Mandal said, we immediately informed higher authorities upon receiving the news. Following the directive of the Superintendent of Police, we went to the spot with the in-charge officer of joint forces. After extinguishing the fire, we started collecting information now. Legal action will be taken accordingly.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Matlab Circle) Khairul Kabir Chowdhury said, we received the news of vandalism and looting at the house of former MP Maya Chowdhury in the evening. Following this, we immediately went with the army, police, and fire service.
The ground floors of two houses were vandalized and set on fire. However, the fire service was able to bring the fire under control quickly, he added.
The police officer mentioned that they are collecting information on who is involved in the incident.
However, at the time of the incident, neither Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury nor any of his family members were present at the house.
Meanwhile, former senior vice president of BNP Matalab Uttar upazila unit, Sarwar Majumdar, said this is an outrageous incident. We do not support it in any way.
‘No member of our party is involved in this incident in any way,’ he stated.
He further added, ‘our leader is Tarique Rahman. We never engage in the politics of violence, nor do we support or encourage it.’
Mofazzal Hossain Choudhury Maya served as the Member of Parliament for Chandpur-2 constituency. A member of the Awami League's Presidium, he held the position of Minister for Disaster Management and Relief from 2014 to 2019.
