A Dhaka court has shown former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque arrested in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of illegally acquiring a 10 katha plot from the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) using false information.

On Wednesday (September 10), acting judge Ibrahim Mia of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court granted the ACC’s petition to show him arrested. Khairul Haque was produced before the court from jail, where both prosecution and defense presented arguments. His bail plea, moved by lawyer Monayem Nabi Shahin, was rejected, and the court ordered him back to prison.

Earlier, on August 6, ACC Deputy Director Abdullah Al Mamun filed the case against Haque and seven others, including former RAJUK chairman Nurul Huda and several senior officials.

According to the casKhairul Haque already owned a six storied ancestral house on nearly 18 kathas of land at NAEM Road in Dhaka but allegedly abused his position as Chief Justice to obtain a separate 10 katha RAJUK plot by submitting false affidavits in violation of the Dhaka Improvement Trust (Allotment of Lands) Rules, 1969.

He is accused of flouting allocation rules, failing to pay installments on time, and later depositing the money five years after allocation without interest, thereby causing a loss of Tk 4.74 lakh to the state.

Khairul Haque was previously arrested on July 24 from his Dhanmondi residence by the Detective Branch in connection with the killing of a Jubo Dal activist during the anti-discrimination student movement. He also faces separate cases filed with Shahbagh Police Station over allegedly delivering unlawful, biased, and fabricated verdicts during his tenure as Chief Justice.
