Evict 74 illegal structures from Buriganga channel: HC

The High Court (HC) on Thurday ordered the authorities concerned to evict 74 illegal structures from Buriganga Adi (original) Channel (Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchar areas) within the next three months.

A HC division virtual court comprising Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order after holding hearing on a writ filed in this regard.

The court asked Dhaka Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to comply with the order as per CS/ RS Survey. It also ordered to submit a report on execution of the order, on June 26.

The High Court also asked Inspector General of Police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and Director General of Rapid Action Battalion to provide assistance in this regard.

Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) lawyer Advocate Manjil Morshed took part in the hearing for the writ petitioner, while Advocate Amatul Islam argued for Department of Environment. Deputy Attorney General Arabindu Roy stood for the state.

The High Court on October 12, 2020, had ordered to conduct a survey to identify occupiers in the area. After that, 74 illegal structures were identified.

Rights group HRPB filed the writ in 2019.
