Ashamoni, a class X student of Melandaha Upazila under Jamalpur district committed suicide by hanging herself, on Thursday night as she was harassed, humiliated and violated by a local terror. In her suicide note she wrote Tamim Ahmed Khan Swapan, a member of local juvenile gang, violated her and warned her not to talk to anyone about it. The ill-fated girl’s autopsy report indicates that she had been raped before the suicide. It needs to be mentioned that Swapan had been constantly stalking, humiliating and harassing Ashamoni on her way to school every day since long.
However, urging the deputy commissioners to take appropriate legal measures to stop violence, eve-teasing, stalking repression and discriminatory behaviour on girls, the prime minister last month instructed them to conduct mobile courts immediately to this end. But the prime minister’s strict warnings seem to have had no effect on the incidence of girls’ sexual harassment and humiliation.
We must not let our women and girls become
victims of harassment and eve-teasing
Women and girls are being harassed and humiliated by the members of young gangsters under the very nose of the local public representatives and law enforcement agencies across the country almost every day. They commit suicide after being violated, stalked, humiliated and harassed sexually. Sometime girls’ photographs are being clicked and uploaded to social networking sites by these gangsters.
A nationwide crackdown on juvenile gang members will have to be launched immediately for ensuring girls’ safe movement, maintaining peace, discipline and stability through eliminating eve teasing and harassment. It has been noticed the juvenile gang members across the country under the guidance of their elder brothers, influential persons are engaging in stalking and harassing girls in many ways despite government’s measures.
We all have to take the responsibility to ensure girls’ safe movement on the way to their respective educational institution. We must not let our women and girls become victims of harassment and eve teasing. We all should be committed to discharge our duties with more sincerity to maintain peace, discipline and stability by stamping out eve-teasing and harassment from the society.
