Heavy rain for the last four days has inundated low-lying areas of Chittwagram city, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet causing the worst suffering to people and triggering landslide fears in hilly areas. The Met Office has issued landslide warnings for the hilly areas of Chattogram and Sylhet divisions due to continuous heavy shower.
Downpours will continue to occur at most of the places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, Met Office forecasts on Friday. Landslides caused by heavy rain are common during the monsoon season.
Many people meet the tragic end of their lives due to landslides in the hilly Chattogram, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari and Cox’s Bazar during the monsoon every year. As torrential rain trigger the risk of landslide during the monsoon, local administrations usually asks the residents living in the hill slopes to evacuate their homes. But, most people are not interested to move to shelter centres.

According to experts, the hill and land structure of Chattogram is different from other areas of the country. The hills of Chattogram are made up of soft rock soil and sedimentary rocks which break apart or crumble easily when it rains and trigger landslides.
Chattogram Sea Port has been advised to hoist Signal 3, stressing that incessant rain might raise the risk of hill slides for the 6,558 families that live on the slopes of 26 hills in the city. Vulnerable families have been asked to evacuate risky structures. However, most of them did not pay heed to the warnings, according to media reports.

We witnessed all of a sudden there was a big landslip. The mountain just collapsed all of a sudden while people were still sleeping. Their homes were also completely buried.
As they do not follow the local administration’s instructions and stay in their respective risky houses during downpour, many of them become the victims of landslide.
Many people died due to landslide in hilly areas of Chittagong, Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachari districts and many parts of Sylhet region following downpour there. Local administration must evacuate the people living on the hill slopes immediately.
