Erosion in Padma renders 50 families homeless

An untimely erosion beside the river Padma along seven kilometre areas of Chalkrajapur and Pakuria unions under Bagha upazila of the district has so far left 50 families homeless. Those homeless families are learned to live under the open-sky for the last one week. Moreover, the erosion has so far devoured standing crops of more than 500 bighas of land in the unions. Many erosion affected families have also left the place and took shelter to the houses of their relatives and friends. The number of homeless families is increasing daily due to the continuous erosion. Local people informed, due to erosion, the areas of Chalkrajapur union are gradually squeezing.  

School teacher Mijanur Rahaman said, the soil along the bank of the river is being devoured by the current of the river Padma. The crop land is also being devoured and many families have taken shelter under nearby trees or under open sky by making makeshift camps using polythene and bamboo. They are also cooking their food under the open sky.  He further informed, two thirds of area of village Kalidaskhali under ward-6 have now been devoured by the erosion of the river. He apprehended, if such erosion of the river continues, the entire village will be devoured by the erosion of river Padma within a short time. Nearly seven kilometre of areas from Panikumra village under Pakuria union to Laxmipur under Chalkrajapur union are now under the grip of erosion of the river Padma. 

Union Parishad Member Shahidul Islam informed, the entire Chalkrajapur village under ward-4 and Luxminagar village under ward-8 have been  devoured by the erosion of the river Padma. More than 50 families of Kalidaskhali village under ward-5 have now been affected by the erosion. The incident has been informed to the local administration, he added. 

DM Monowar Hossain Babul Dewan, Chairman of Chalkrajapur union informed, 49 families of his union have been rendered homeless due to erosion of the river during the last one week. A list of the affected families have been made, he further said.

Sharmin Akhter, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Bagha informed the incident of untimely erosion along the river Padma has been informed to the higher authorities.
