Houses of four residents of Nich Palashi Char village under Chalk Rajapur union of Bagha upazila of the district have been devoured by the untimely erosion of the river Padma. The scene of the erosion was witnessed in the affected char areas on Monday morning.
It is learnt, during the last five years, five char villages of Chalkrajapur union have also been devoured by the erosion of the river. Three Primary Schools of the devoured villages have been shifted and the Chalkrajapur High School situated in the char is at the risk of erosion.
Sources informed within one week, the untimely erosion of the river Padma at Nich Palasy Char has devoured the houses of Sattar Bepari, Badsha Ali, Shahadul Islam and Sultan Ali. They took shelter with their family members to other places. Moreover, hundreds of families who used to live in the Char villages have lost their houses in river erosion and taken shelter in other places during the last year. Siddik Bepari of Kalidaskhali Char was seen sitting beside the eroded part of the river by holding his head with his hands. He informed his maize fields on five bighas of land have been devoured by the erosion of the river Padma.
On the other hand, the Chalkrajapur Char of union-6, Dadpur Char of ward-7, Plassey-Fatepur Char of ward-9, Kalidaskhali Char of ward-5, Chowmadia Char of Ward-3 while three government Primary Schools from affected Chalkajapur, Purbakalidaskhali and Chowmadia villages have been shifted to other places.
The Chalkrajapur High School and Bazar, No-4 ward of Chalkrajapur, Kalidaskhali of Ward-3, Luxminagar of Ward 8, Atarpara Char of Ward-1, Chowmadia Char of Ward-2, Kalidaskhali of Ward-5 and Purba Kalidaskhali of Ward-6 are all in the high risk of being eroded in the river Padma.
DM Babul Monwar Dewan of Chalkrajapur Union in this connection informed the list of last year's 250 families has been submitted to the local administration. More than 50 families are now at risk of being eroded. 50 electric poles from those risky villages have been withdrawn. 48 affected families were paid Taka 50,000 each by the former State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam M.P. and the effort is underway to assist other affected families.
