Environ-friendly bio-toilets to be set up in trains soon

Published : 24 Nov 2020 09:25 PM

Environment-friendly bio-toilets will be set up in all toilets of trains of the country soon.

Kudrat-E-Khuda, Chief Mechanical Engineer of Bangladesh Railway, West Zone in Rajshahi, said this.

He said, due to the absence of bio-toilets the environment of the railway track and the surroundings are being damaged and the railway authorities are also incurring a loss. Because, in most of the time, human wastes of the toilets of the trains of West zone railway are disposed off on railway tracts or on Jamuna railway bridge.

As a result, the clips those are clung with the railway tracts got rusted in a short time and thus damaged. As a result, the government has taken steps to set up bio-toilets and automatic washing plants in all rail coaches of the country. Such a step will save money and lessen the environmental pollution as well.

According to concerned sources of West Zone authorities in Rajshahi, disposal of human wastes of passengers in the conventional process through toilet outlets to railway tracts was damaging the tracts and the surrounding environment badly. It also requires a lot of time and money to clean the disposed of materials from the toilets and from on the railway tracts. However, due to setting up of bio-toilets and using of automatic washing plants will take less than one minute to clean a coach.

The sources further mentioned the rail clips on the tracts of Bangabandhu Bridge are getting rust due to disposal of human waste on those. As a result, often the clips are needed to change and the concerned department is incurring a loss.

Quoting the decision of the Railway Ministry, west zone railway sources further mentioned, the decision of setting up bio-toilets and automatic washing plants has been taken under procurement of Broad Gauge and Meter Gauge passenger carriage project of Bangladesh Railway recently.

Chief Mechanical Engineer of West Zone railway Kudrat-E-Khuda further mentioned, there might be a large scale accident unless the clips of railway tracts are changed in a short time. Moreover, the disposed of human waste was also damaging valuable machinery below the coaches.

That is why the sophisticated, environment-friendly railway service will be introduced like that of developed countries by adding bio-toilets in all coaches.  He further mentioned, the bio toilets will automatically clean the human waste by using various bacterium after a fixed time and thus the intensity of the environmental pollution will be decreased substantially.

The total cost of the project for implementation of the bio-toilets and automatic washing plant has been fixed at Taka 1,374.50 crore and the project is expected to end in 2021. A total of 200-meter gauge carriages, 50 broad gauge carriages and two automatic train washing plants will be procured under the project.

It is learnt, the bio-toilets have at first been introduced in the country in Dhaka-Rajshahi 'Bonolata Express' train.
