Engineer Najeeb Kayser from the Railway Pakshi Divisional Office in Ishwardi has drawn widespread attention in the railway sector by developing a rail line cutting machine using local technology—an innovation that could save the department significant costs.
Previously, the rail line cutting machines were imported from Germany at a cost of Tk 5 to 7 lakh each. Inspired by the same design, Engineer Najeeb Kayser built a similar machine domestically for only Tk 27,500, using iron instead of aluminum. The motor, locally produced in Dhaka, was also fitted into the system, further reducing costs.
With assistance from his colleagues, Najeeb completed the machine within just 11 days at the senior engineer’s workshop near Ishwardi Railway Junction. The device has already been tested in several locations, performing as effectively as the German version. Workers who operated the machine expressed satisfaction with its performance.
A graduate of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) and a 33rd BCS cadre officer, Engineer Najeeb joined Bangladesh Railway in 2014. He currently serves in the Pakshi Division under the engineering department.
Speaking about the project, Najeeb said that higher railway authorities have been informed and are pleased with the innovation. Once fully approved, the machine will be used for rail cutting operations across both eastern and western zones of Bangladesh Railway.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Liakat Sharif Khan praised the invention, saying, “This locally developed rail line cutting machine is good news for the railway. Engineer Najeeb Kayser has brought pride to the department. If the machine proves durable, it will be mass-produced at the Ishwardi workshop.”
