Several veteran academicians of the country have opined that they are not against student politics as it helps flourish democratic practice and spirit among the future leaders of the country. Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury and Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman came up with the comments at a function at the Central Women’s University in the capital on Wednesday.
They termed the universities as an open space for free-thinking, adding that they oppose hooliganism and criminal activities on the campus but not student politics. As student politics has immense bearing on the people’s fundamental rights, such polity cannot be sent to exile by promulgating any law, they observed.
They said student politics would continue to prevail as it was in the past, and it cannot be banned. “I don’t support ban of student politics. Shunning all violent activities, the students will have to do politics in a democratic way,” Serajul Islam Choudhury said. Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury further said, “Financial development is taking place in Bangladesh, but this development is being marred by various darkness prevails in the society.”
Women are being oppressed in the society. Due to capitalism, all people irrespective of men and women, are being exploited. We can remove this darkness with the light of education, he added. Describing a university as the place of free-thinking, Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman of Dhaka University said, “Hooliganism and crime is taking place in guise of student politics. I stand totally against it, but not against student politics.”
"There will be difference of opinion at the university. There will be logic and also denial at the same time,” the National Professor said. The eminent personalities were speaking at the function organized by Central Women's University to honors four renowned personalities for their outstanding contribution to education.
The four personnel’s are Professor Anisuzzaman, Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury, writer Rabia Khatun and educationist Rasheda K Chowdhury. Rasheda K Chowdhury said stressed the need for practicing values within the family as education of a human child starts in the family. Eighty percent of the women are abused in their homes by their family members. Therefore, we have to start protesting from inside their homes, she added.
Central Women's University Vice-Chancellor Professor Parveen presided over the function. Among others, Professor Emeritus Nazma Chowdhury, Central Women's University Board of Trustee members Kazi Jahedul Hasan and Kazi Jisan Hasan, head of Journalism and Media Studies department Sajib Sarkar, Photographer Taslima Akhtar and teachers and students of the university were present.
