Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam said that there will be a revolutionary change in waste management in the country through generating electricity from waste.
'Policy Activation for Sustainable Plastic Waste Management' organized by FBCCI at Hotel Sheraton, Banani in the capital on Saturday.
He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the seminar entitled 'Enabling Policy for Sustainable Plastic Waste Management' organized by FBCCI at Hotel Sheraton in Banani, capital.
The minister said that consumption has increased with the increase in people's income. As a result, more amount of garbage is being generated than before. And these wastes are generated not only in cities but also in villages. As more waste is generated than before, bringing it into proper management has become a major challenge.
Md. Tajul Islam said, initiatives have been taken to produce electricity by burning all types of waste generated in the country. In some city corporations including Dhaka, the activities are at the final stage. Hope to start generating electricity from waste very soon. And if this process starts, it will be possible to solve the waste problem in the country.
In this context, the minister said that electricity is being produced from waste in many countries of the world. There are different models for this. Following the model of developed countries, in our country too, the system of generating electricity from waste has been adopted. He also said that the effective model for our country is being implemented keeping in mind the protection of the environment and human health.
He further said that polythene or any other bag is given separately for each product for which more household waste is being generated. Polythene cannot be stopped in one day. Again jute bags cannot be handed over to people. The use of plastic has increased manifold. It also cannot be suddenly banned. So what is the alternative! It has to be worked on. A proper management should be developed for waste disposal.
The minister said that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made the country independent.
And his privileged daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working day and night for the development and prosperity of the country. As a result unprecedented success has been achieved in all areas. Many feel bad when talking about these achievements. He said that the road design has been made to develop and prosper the country by 2041. And this road design is planned and well thought out.
In the speech of the chief guest, the local government minister said that the detailed area plan-dap has been published in gazette form. In this DAP, maximum importance has been given to make Dhaka livable and beautiful. Questioning whether it would be appropriate to build playgrounds, educational institutions, markets, recreation centers, greening and water bodies and not enough roads, he said that not only people's residences but also all civic services should be ensured in Dhaka. Which is possible by implementing this DAP.
He said, all people cannot be kept in Dhaka with all facilities. For this reason, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is implementing the philosophy of 'My village is my city' to deliver all the amenities of the city to the villages. Many services have already been extended to remote rural areas. As a result, employment opportunities are being created all over the country. If these facilities reach the villages, the pressure of Dhaka-bound people will reduce.
Mentioning that it will be possible to solve any problem if everyone is motivated by patriotism, the minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, people of all walks of life are united today. Killing people, arson and disrupting public life in the name of movement cannot be the language of democracy.
Md Tajul Islam urged everyone to stand by the present government to transform the country into the golden bangla of Bangabandhu by facing any challenge and conspiracy.
Forest and Environment Minister Md. Shahab Uddin and Prime Minister's Office Senior Secretary Tofazzal Hossain Mia were present as special guests in the event.
Besides, FBCCI President Md Jasim Uddin and senior officials, Unilever Bangladesh Managing Director and CEO Javed Akhtar, Bangladesh Plastic Goods and Manufacturers Exporters Association President Shamim Ahmed and urban planners and architects among others spoke.
