An elderly small-scale businessman was brutally attacked and had a tendon in his leg severed, allegedly by BNP activists, after refusing to pay extortion money and join their party. The incident took place on Wednesday at Langolbandh Bazar in Shailkupa upazila's newly listed Malithia village.
The victim, 70-year-old Abdul Jalil Molya, son of the late Johor Molya, was returning home from the market when he was allegedly ambushed near the Langolbandh bridge.
According to family members, a group of 12-13 individuals, including local BNP leaders Harun, Tuzam, Ershad of Chakdah, and Pavel Mondal, Shahin, and Mannu of Ulubaria, attacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.
Relatives rushed Jalil to Magura Sadar Hospital, from where he was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment on Thursday morning.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Jalil claimed the attackers were supporters of former Union Parishad chairman Abdul Bari Molya and BNP Joint Secretary Babul Molya. He had been under pressure for months to donate a large sum of money and join the BNP, which he refused.
Shailkupa Police Station OC Masum Khan confirmed hearing of the incident but said no formal complaint had been lodged yet.
